Literary Essay on Character

Carter’s growth

One of the most common themes in literature is making the main character from being immature to a mature person. In this book the Red Pyramid, the main character Carter is like a childish boy at first then grows into a mature teenager. The Red Pyramid is about siblings named Carter and Sadie. Their mom has died due to an “accident.” Carter was living with his dad and Sadie was living with her grandparents after a very long and messy battle of law in court. A few years later, one day in summer their dad and Carter went to London to pick up Sadie for the summer. They went to the British Museum which in there, their dad tried to summon the god Osiris. But instead of just summoning him, he also summons Set, the evil god and 3 other gods. Set traps Sadie’s and Carter’s dad in a coffin. So their mission is to free their dad from the coffin and destroy Set. In the book The Red Pyramid, Carter grows from an immature kid to a mature teenager.
In the beginning Carter is really immature. He shows signs of jealousy and being cowardly in the beginning. For example it shows that Carter is jealous at Sadie, it says this. “”Open,”” Sadie murmured. I stared at her, because it sounded like she had just translated the word, but that was impossible. I’d been hanging around Dad for years, and even I could read only a few hieroglyphs. They are seriously hard to learn” (Riordan 28). Here it shows that Carter is amazed and kind of jealous at Sadie because she can read more Hieroglyphs than Carter even though she spends little time with her dad. Carter was cowardly and irresponsible in the beginning of the book because it shows from this quote in the book. “She crossed her arms. “Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it? We explore the library.” “Hold on!” Carter cried. “You can’t just--” (Riordan 83-84). It shows that even when Amos is gone he doesn’t do anything because he doesn’t want to break the rules. This shows that in the beginning Carter is really immature. From one can conclude from this is that Carter shows sign of immaturity through the beginning of the book.

Now after nearing the end of the book Carter is more mature. He is now more brave and mature. “A glowing fist slammed into him, and the Red God few backward with such force, he cracked a column which tumbled on top of him”(Riordan 453). In here it shows that he is facing against the red god even though the others aren't helping him yet. He gives some advice which shows that he is now more wise that the Carter in the beginning . “” The book, Sadie!” Carter shouted as he ran. “Do it now!”(Riordan 478). It shows that even when Sadie doesn’t knows what to do, Carter gives her advice on what to do.  From what one can conclude from this is that in the beginning of the book Carter has grown from an immature boy to a mature teenager.

In, conclusion Carter grows from an immature boy to a mature teenager. This means that one day Carter could become a great leader one day, because he is confident and has qualities to become a leader. What all of this shows is that even though sometimes in a book it may seem that the main character is a person who is childish and immature, could grow sometime near the end of the book into the great and mature person.
